Hancock 29

The Old Grandstand at Fairgrounds
Artist - Robert A. Powell

The old grandstand at the Hancock County Fairgrounds has been in use since the mid 1950's.
The land, just off Highway 1389, was sold to the Hawesville Lions Club by Paul Keown in the early '50s.
With the aid of volunteer labor, the Lions cleared the land and built the grandstand. Before this time, the fair was alternately held in Hawesville and Lewisport.
Many exhibits of baked and canned goods, arts and crafts, and even shocks of the tallest corn or the largest pumpkin are liable to be seen.
Beauty contest are held, from the baby show to the grand prize of all - Hancock County Sorghum Queen.
The largest(and perhaps most exuberant) crowds to gather in Hancock County are known to fill the old grandstand at Fair time.
The secluded - isolated look in this picture is how the grandstand appears to the visitor nearly three-fourths of the time. Though everyone will recognize the structure, their personal memories will no doubt be filled with some activity attended here.
